“I would be
interested in conducting some student instruction in design partly
related to what may be termed ‘shelter and furnishings.’ I would
be anxious that this instruction be in the nature of training in
thinking with respect to forms and requirements of the setting for
living and working. In other words, design should relate to
reality; the reality of the life for today; the houses for
improved living, improved community planning; and a richer life
which presupposes the philosophy of surroundings that are
attractive, sanitary and efficient.” A. Lawrence Kocher to
Theodore Dreier, 17 July 1940, Theodore Dreier Papers, North
Carolina State Archive.
