MARGARET WILLIAMSON PETERSON
NOTES -- SUMMER 1945 |
| |
|
| |
Margaret Williamson Peterson's
remarkable notes from the 1945 summer session convey the intensity of the
summer and the richness of the offerings. In addition to a Summer School
and a Summer Work Camp, the college offered a Summer Art Institute and a
Summer Music Institute. Classes were held in the daytime and in the
evenings there were concerts and community lectures. The notes reflect the
lectures she attended and for which she took notes, not the entire lecture
series. The notes from the classes of
Josef Albers demonstrate the liveliness of his classes and the breadth of
topics discussed. This stands in start contrast to the sterile exercises
that others came to incorporate into the design curriculum. They are
included in their entirety in the expectation that they will enliven the
studies of artists, teachers and students alike.
Of the lecturers, Werner Wolff and Peppi
Weisberger were visitors to the college. Percy Baker and Mary Caroline
Richards were faculty candidates. Josef Marx, Erwin Bodky and Alfred
Einstein were guest faculty for the Summer Music Institute and Karl With,
Walter Gropius, Lyonel Feininger, Robert Motherwell, Mary Callery, and
Fritz Goro were faculty for the Summer Art Institute. Fritz Hansgirg, who
taught physics, was asked to give a lecture after the atomic bomb was
dropped. |
