STUDENT EXPERIENCE IN EXPERIMENTAL EDUCATION IN THE EARLY YEARS OF BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE (1933-43)
Section 1. Role of the Arts The artistic process as a major goal. Individual, active participation was fostered but not required. Focus on really “seeing” and “thinking” for oneself, not on the production of art. Self-direction, self-discipline, initiative, development of the whole person, including the emotions, was emphasized. The arts were diffused throughout the education, not segregated entirely into separate courses, influencing also those who did not take courses.
