SECTION 1. ROLE OF THE ARTS
Statement by Robert
Sunley
*
The artistic process as
a major goal.
*
Individual, active
anticipation was
fostered but not
required.
* Focus on really “seeing”
and
“thinking” for
oneself, not on the
production of art.
*
Self-direction, self-
discipline,
initiative,
development of the
whole person....
*
The arts were diffused
throughout the
education ....

Interlude
Mary Brett Daniels: A community response to this build up of intensity
was that an "interval" would be declared. I never understood
what amorphous authority decided to declare an interval, but classes and
the work program would suddenly be suspended for three days. It was
understood – again by custom, not by rule – that people would do
something of their own devising, perhaps creative, perhaps climb the
ridge.... At the end of the interval there was a community gathering.
People who wanted to could tell about what they did – funny, absurd,
serious, candid, not – I believe – particularly self-conscious.
Will Hamlin: Each term there was a weeklong "Interlude,"
its dates decided by the faculty on the basis of their estimate of
campus morale, and announced at breakfast the day it began ... the
interlude was to "paint the painting or write the poem or read the
book you've not found time for."
